Programs

Choose the mitochondrial disease programs that fit you.

Each program gives patients and caregivers a clear list of ways to participate and earn program credits. You can belong to more than one program. Choose a disease-specific program when it matches your diagnosis or family experience, or choose All Mito if you are unsure, still seeking a diagnosis, or want the broad community program.

Open programs accept members now. Planning programs are interest lists for programs still being prepared. Open each program's credit guide to see the exact steps and maximum credits before you join.

Alliance members and researchers collaborating during a community workshop

How it works

Join, complete clear steps, and track your credits.

You do not have to complete everything at once. Start by joining a program, then follow its checklist. Some steps use information you choose to keep in Mito Map. Other steps become available when MDA invites you to a check-in, survey, or review activity.

Each program card shows the maximum credits available.

Open the credit guide to see every step and the credits it adds.

Your private medical details stay in Mito Map, not on this public page.

Your dashboard shows your programs, completed activity, and credit ledger.

For researchers and partners

Start with the program that matches the people you hope to work with.

Use an open program when you want to discuss research with an existing community. Use a planning program when you want to help prepare a future study. MDA reviews requests before members are contacted, and private health records remain in Mito Map.

Open programs

POLG, TWNK, OPA1, MELAS / m.3243A>G, Leigh syndrome, and All Mito already have active participation paths.

Planning-stage programs

LHON, MERRF, mtDNA deletions, m.3243 multisystem, and MT-ATP6 / NARP are the right place for future study planning and outreach.

Research requests

Researchers can ask about study planning, disease history, biomarkers, study measures, recruitment, or returning useful results to the community.

Current programs

Compare programs, total credits, and required steps.

Every patient-program card shows its maximum credits. Open the credit guide inside a card to see exactly what you need to do.

Program goals are intentionally larger than expected active participation because some members may not complete baseline evidence, consent steps, or longitudinal updates. These figures are multi-year planning estimates for potential qualifying value across data partnerships, recruitment, natural history, publication work, and related program activity. They are not annual revenue forecasts, expected funding, payment promises, or guaranteed distribution amounts.

New disease programs

When a community needs its own path, start with the clearest named cohort.

If you are building a new disease program, start with the closest existing cohort and explain what makes the community distinct. Tell MDA what the patient value should be and whether you need study design, sponsorship, or program support. MDA can then route the request to the right review path without pulling detailed health data into the public site.

Name the disease community and why it needs a separate program.

Say whether you need study design, recruitment planning, registry support, or program sponsorship.

Explain the patient burden and return of value in plain language.

Use aggregate or summary signals for first review; keep detailed records in Mito Map.
